Preparing our Children for their First Temple Experience

Image
It's a special milestone for our family that our youngest daughter, Czerinah Ellah is turning 12 this year and becomes eligible to participate in temple ordinances with her limited-use temple recommend and participate in certain sacred ordinances within the temple. Having her able to participate alongside the rest of our family is a joyous occasion. We are thrilled for this opportunity to support one another in these sacred experiences. We are glad that she will no longer need to wait for us to finish our temple sessions and can now make important covenants and receive blessings that can strengthen her faith and deepen her relationship with our Heavenly Father.    As Czerinah Ellah prepares for this significant step, we believe it's important to help her understand the sacredness and significance of the temple ordinances. We encourage her to study and learn about the principles and teachings of the gospel, and guide her in developing a strong foundation of faith. P...

Nurturing Trust in Heavenly Father Amidst Uncertainty

Image
Breakfast after our early morning Seminary Class  After two failed attempts to obtain the plates of brass from Laban, Nephi crept into Jerusalem by night with faith in the Lord. However, he had little idea of how to accomplish his task (1 Nephi 4). We can definitely relate to Nephi's experience of feeling strongly about something but being unsure of how to accomplish it. Personally, there have been many instances in my life where I've felt a strong desire or prompting to pursue a particular goal or take a certain path, but I've been uncertain about the steps to take or the outcome.   In such situations, it's important to remember that we are not alone. Just as Nephi had faith in the Lord, we too can trust in Heavenly Father's guidance and His willingness to help us. He knows our desires, strengths, and weaknesses, and He is aware of the challenges we may face.   When faced with uncertainty, I find it helpful to turn to prayer and seek guidance from a hig...

How Faith in God Helps us Overcome Challenges

Image
This morning in our Seminary class, we learned a great lesson from the story of Nephi and his brothers. Sometimes, we may be faced with challenging situations or tasks that require obedience and faith in God. Just like Nephi and his brothers were commanded to return to Jerusalem to obtain the brass plates, we too may be asked by the Lord to do difficult things.   In these moments, it's important to trust in God and have faith that He will provide us with the strength and guidance we need to accomplish what He asks of us. It may not always be easy, and we may face obstacles along the way, but having faith in God's plan can help us overcome any challenges.   By exercising our faith in God and being obedient to His commandments, we can learn and grow from these experiences. We can develop a stronger relationship with God and gain a deeper understanding of His love and guidance in our lives.   So, when faced with difficult tasks or situations, let's remember the e...

Seeking Understanding

Image
In our early morning Seminary class today, we felt like we became part of the Book of Mormon and as if we were transported into 600 BC, becoming one with the family of Lehi.   It's interesting to see the contrasting examples of Laman and Lemuel and Nephi. Laman and Lemuel's lack of understanding and disbelief led them to murmur and complain. On the other hand, Nephi's diligent efforts to seek understanding and follow the Lord's commandments allowed his heart to be softened, leading him to believe and obey.   It's a powerful reminder that seeking knowledge and having faith in the Lord's teachings can have a profound impact on our lives. When we approach the scriptures and the words of the prophets with an open heart and a desire to learn, the Lord can work in our lives to strengthen our faith and guide us in the right path. There are several practical ways we can diligently seek to understand the Lord's commandments and allow our hearts to be soft...

Unlocking Spiritual Wisdom: Pondering and Applying Counsel from Prophets

Image
First Seminary Class of the year 2024 In our early morning Seminary class today, we learned the importance of receiving and following God’s prophet. Prophets do not always share messages that are popular with the world, but their teachings and warnings demonstrate the Lord’s love for His people. Lehi was called by God to preach repentance to the people of Jerusalem. Despite his pleas and warnings, they rejected his words and sought to kill him.  One truth we can learn from Lehi’s example is that God calls prophets to warn of consequences of sin and to testify of Jesus Christ. Here are some guidance on how to ponder and apply counsel from prophets:   1.  Create a Study Journal : Start by setting up a study journal where you can record your thoughts, impressions, and insights from your study of the prophets' warnings. This journal will serve as a valuable resource for reflection and growth. 2.  Seek Guidance from Heavenly Father : Begin your study and refle...

An Imperfect Family's Example of Faith

Image
In our family devotional and scripture study from The Book of Mormon this Monday morning, we talked about the family of Lehi, a real family who lived way back 600 BC who also went through the ups and downs of life and there's a lot about their experiences that we can relate to today. This family lived in a world full of wickedness. But the Lord promised them that if they would follow Him, He would lead them to safety. It wasn't easy for them. They had some seriously rough times, but they also had their fair share of blessings and miracles along the way. It wasn't all rainbows and butterflies for this family. They had their fair share of arguments and fights. And get this, it's captured in such detail in the scriptures! We're talking about parents trying their best to inspire faith in their kids while worrying about their safety. Then you have these kids who have to decide for themselves if they're going to believe their parents or not. And don't...

Reflection and Anticipation

Image
As we are about to wrap up 2023 and reflecting on how the year went for me, it's so timely that I found the following questions from the Come, Follow Me as I study Revelation 20:12–15 this morning: Suppose an author offered to write a book about your life. What details or experiences would you want included?  If you knew that your future actions would also be recorded, how would you approach your life differently? What do you hope will be written about you in the book of life?  How would you describe the Savior’s role in your book of life?  In your opinion, why is it significant that it is called “the Lamb’s book of life”? REFLECTION: If an author were to write a book about my life, there are a few details and experiences that I would want to be included:   1.  Personal growth and self-discovery: I would want the book to capture my journey of self-improvement, the challenges I've faced, and how I've grown as an individual. 2.  Relationships and...

What Matters Most This Christmas

Image
The holiday season can often become overwhelming with the pressure to fulfill expectations and create picture-perfect moments. But it's important to remember the true meaning of Christmas and prioritize what truly matters. Our loved ones don't need a mountain of new toys or extravagant gifts. What they truly need is our presence, love, and attention. Taking the time to rest, reflect, and spend quality moments together is what creates lasting memories and strengthens our relationships.   Finding solace in the message of love and hope that Christmas brings is truly special. It's a time to appreciate the blessings we have, express gratitude, and look forward to the future with hope and anticipation.  Slowing down, saying no to unimportant things, and embracing the serenity of Christmas can bring a sense of peace and joy to our hearts.   Our family is looking forward to exploring the deeper meaning of Christmas, going beyond the traditional narratives and delving ...

Family Camp and Retreat at Haven for Ecological and Alternative Living (HEAL)

Image
Our 2-day Family Camp and Retreat with the staff of CLEVERKIDS School headed by Dra. Emeliza B. Mones and with other families on 18-19 December 2023 was such a unique and healing experience as we had  the opportunity not only to have a Family Day but to appreciate living and learning in an ecological way. We stayed at Haven for Ecological and Alternative Living (HEAL).  HEAL was created back in 2006 by the Medical Mission Sisters. Its main goal is to address the healing needs of not just humans, but the whole community of life. They want to be like a shining light of hope, transforming the interconnected web of life and standing up against anything that threatens it. The activity commenced with an orientation followed by an eco-walk.  We all learned something really important - the connection between the Earth's well-being and the health of us humans. We're all in this together, striving for the abundant life that God wants for all of ...

AUTUMN and MARRIAGE

Image
So a lot of y'all have been asking if we also ever had issues in our marriage. Well, we gotta say, it ain't all rainbows and butterflies.  In our 18 years together, we have learned that marriage has seasons or phases. Let us share one of them: the AUTUMN season within the context of a MARRIAGE.  Just like how it is in nature, autumn represents a transitional period between the abundant summer and the dormant winter. In a marriage, autumn is a time of change and transformation. It is a period when couples go through personal and relational changes. It's a perfect time for self-reflection, personal growth, and deep thinking.  Similar to how leaves change colors in autumn, individuals in a marriage go through a metamorphosis that affects the dynamics of their relationship. The autumn season may bring some uncertainties, but it's also a chance for couples to strengthen their bond. When change comes knocking, it's important for partners to adapt and embrace i...

Suitor and Father Moment

Image
8 October 2023, Recreating moments 25 years ago, while Anatolin was visiting me at home at the age of 15, my father asked to go out with him to buy "ulam" (viand or dish). While walking, it was in this same spot at Callejon St., our old home in Bauang, La Union where my father advised him to go on a mission first. He then served in the Philippines Cagayan De Oro Mission at 19 for 2 years. In October 2003, one month after his mission, we got engaged and eventually married in the Manila Philippines Temple in 2005. Fast forward 2023, our children love listening to that moment of their dad with their grandfather and revisiting this memorable spot.  Talking about the story, our 17-year old daughter Cerah, then asked her dad, "What would you do if someone visits me at home?" It was a long conversation but on the qualities Anatolin is looking for in our daughters’ suitors or boyfriends, he said the top on the list is being Christlike. Our children o...

BARKADA

Image
On the way home from church today, we saw a group of teenagers aimlessly loitering around. Some obviously in romantic relationship showing their affection in public. My husband, Anatolin wondered if their parents even knew where their children were and what they were doing that very hour. I thought about his question for a second and responded, maybe their parents are busy working or might be busy hanging out with their friends too.  Talking about "barkadas" (group of friends), our son Amulek said that without the light and the gospel of Jesus Christ in his life, he would also be one of the boys his age loitering with friends. Then our older son, Ammon said, barkadas nowadays bring more bad influence than good. Listening to them, I realized how all our children prefer spending their free time at home with our family and how our boys look up to their dad and consider him as their barkada. Just earlier, on the way to church, Ammon shared that he would want to be lik...
