Letters, Wires, and a $500 Treasure | The Post Office at Heritage Park

There’s something so special about stepping into a building that once stood in a different time and place. This is the old Post Office and Telephone Exchange, originally built in 1908 in the quiet community of Cayley, about 60 kilometres south of Calgary.

Long ago, before modern postal systems existed, the Hudson’s Bay Company managed mail across Western Canada. Then in 1874, the North West Mounted Police stepped in, serving as the region’s first postmasters. It wasn’t until 1883 that Calgary got its very first post office, tucked right inside Bannerman’s Hay, Flour and Feed Store!

Back then, post offices didn’t need much space. They fit neatly in the corner of a general store, or even someone’s living room.

This building was constructed by a man named Rasmus Skov, and inside you’ll find a genuine 1240 magneto switchboard, still connected to 16 telephone lines throughout the Park today.

And here’s a lovely detail: this little piece of history was sold to Heritage Park in 1964 for just $500, a precious treasure preserved for generations to come.

It reminds us that no matter how much technology changes, from letters to telephones to instant messages, the human heart remains the same. We all just want to stay connected.
