23 Ideas to Make Memories with our Children

We all know that creating memories with our children is powerful. But the day to day hustle and bustle can leave us short on time and zapped of energy. It is even harder in this age of social media and constant stimulation from outside sources. However, it only becomes possible if we put it on top of our priority and not with our "leftover time".

My husband, Anatolin and I both agree that our own childhood memories helped define who we are today. Even if we can’t quite remember everything about childhood, there are those moments that stick with us no matter how old we get. We also want our children to be able to look back on their own childhood and recall all the special moments we had together. We know it will provide them with positive things to look back upon when teen or adult life gets too hard. They’ll be able to cherish these times forever.

Here are 23 ideas we found interesting and fun that can help you begin creating your own memories with your family:

1. Make family mealtime an important part of your daily life.

2. Take the time to plan one night each week to focus on only family by playing games or going on a walk.

3. Have a special meal out once a month with your family.

4. Have one-on one date with each child.

5. Plan a family vacation or camping trip at least once a year.

6. Start new holiday traditions.

7. Find a local ice cream place and try some local food.

8. Spend some time together at a library, children’s museum or at a local park.

9. Plan movie nights with popcorn or with the kids' favorite snacks.

10. Open the cookbook and bake a new dessert or make your favorite recipe together.

11. Watch the clouds or enjoy star gazing.

12. Have a bit of friendly competition over board games.

13. Let your kids give you a makeover, you do their makeup, and allow them to try on any of your clothes that they’d like. Dress up and put on a fashion show with all the accessories. Don't forget to take photos.

14. Blow bubbles outside.

15. Wash the car together and have a water fight.

16. Plant some flowers, pull out weeds together and get dirty.

17. Be a kid with your kid. Build a fort out of chairs and blankets. Play with toys and play pretend.

18. Have a DIY project.

19. Plan a karaoke night or dance party. Have fun with your favorite playlist.

20. Visit a nearby nature trail and explore.

21. Turn off tech for an hour or more and cuddle up with a good book.

22. Do personal or family history work and research. Record stories behind family heirlooms or old photographs.

23. When you have run out of ideas, simply join or participate in your children's favorite activities.

As a family, you too, can come up with so many fun ways to make happy memories together. Creating warm memories of good times with our family will become treasures in our hearts as parents and in our children's hearts to pull out on tough days.

After all, our children need our presence more than our presents. As parents, giving our time, energy, and care to our children is one of the most important things we can do. Children grow up too quickly. Surely, we don't want to let their childhood slip by without being involved and letting our actions show them how much we love them.
